If the copied stack also becomes empty, the collector goes into its sweeping phase. Allocations in the sweeping phase are preceded by a sweep of a constant number of white objects. When all white objects have been swept, the collector goes back into its idle phase. Except for the write-barrier, all work in Yuasa’s collector is done while allocating new objects.
Because the memory is compacted and placed at one end of the heap, allocation of n bytes can be done by simply sliding a pointer n positions in the free memory region. An advantage of the technique is that the running time of the garbage collector is proportional to the number of live objects. Thus, a large heap size does not affect the running time of the collector, and the collector can be run less frequently. Appel [App87] has demonstrated that using a “standard” computer with a heap size seven times larger than the amount of live memory, a copying garbage collector is faster than stack allocation!
