The car parked on the street on a snowy morning is a resource for its user to go to work, but a constraint for the work of the snowplough operator. Once the owner moves the car, the snowplough operator can complete his task. The snow is a constraint in different ways on the car owner and the driver of the snowplough. Many constraints are in the form of general and abstract rules of behaviour, but they can be given a physical meaning in terms of location in space and time. In time-geography, constraints are divided into three categories: Capability constraints – limit the activities of the individual because of his/hers biological nature, such as the vital need to eat and sleep regularly, and/or because of the tools she or he controls.

Resources must be arranged in time-space pockets, which are secured against external disorder and at the same time allow essential resource flows to come through (Lenntorp 1998). “In order to carry out any project smoothly and undisturbed an actor needs access to room and periods of time that are sufficiently free from encroachment emanating from processes in the vicinity. ” (Hägerstrand 1985:207) A pocket of local order has a spatial location, and life within the pocket is governed and maintained by conventions, norms and formal rules (Lenntorp 1998; Ellegård 2001).
